Alhamdulillah! All praise belongs to Allah!
The Iranian authorities have been forced to postpone for a month the planned execution of six Sunni men in Ghezel Hesar Prison, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA). Two of the men, Hamed Ahmedi and Sedigh Mohammadi, had been moved to solitary confinement on Wednesday the 25th of September, sparking fears that their execution would be carried out the following day. Amnesty International had published an urgent press release stating that the six men were at risk of 'imminent execution'.
According to reports, Iranian authorities had come under increased pressure over its plans to execute the men. Families of the prisoners held protests and wrote letters to the Iranian authorities demanding a halt to the executions. The plight of the men was heard internationally, and Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International urged the Iranian regime to stop the executions.
Iran was placed under further pressure as details of the prisoners' cases came to light. The men had all been severely tortured, and many were forced to 'confess' to crimes they had not committed. They faced charges such as 'membership of a Salafi group' and 'Moharebeh' (enmity against God/the state). Some were accused of taking part in crimes that happened whilst the men were already imprisoned. None of the men were affiliated with any armed group, they were merely active in spreading Sunni Islam and criticizing the government, a dangerous occupation under the Iranian dictatorship.
The government was forced to attempt to silence the wave of criticism. A written court order was reportedly produced earlier today, ordering the executions to be delayed for a month. There are reports that the six prisoners may have a retrial. Many, however, remain skeptical about the latest developments.
The six men are; Hamed Ahmadi, Kamal Molayee, Jamshed Dehghani, Jahangir Dehghani, Sedigh Mohammadi and Hadi Hosseini.
There are unconfirmed reports that the cases of 26 Sunni prisoners facing execution in Rajai Shahr prison will also be re-examined.
