This is our Sunni brother, Firouz Hamedi (Ilyas), currently detained in Rajai Shahr prison, Karaj, Iran.
Firouz Hamedi, known as Ilyas, was arrested on November 18, 2010, when plain-clothed officers began shooting at his house. His terrified wife and 16-month old child were at home at the time.
Fearing for their safety, Ilyas ran out of the house, unarmed. He was shot twice in the leg.
Ilyas, along with his wife and child, were taken to the Ministry of Intelligence detention center in Sanandaj.
In detention, injured and without being given adequate medical treatment, he was tortured. Intelligence agents severely beat him, and subjected him also to psychological torture.
In one incident, interrogators bought his wife in front of him, and threatened to rape her if he did not 'confess'.
His wife and child were held in detention for a week, before being released on bail. He was not allowed to see them again for an entire year.
Ilyas was interrogated for 20 months, and throughout this time was held in a solitary cell located in the basement of the Intelligence agency. Finally, he was transferred to Rajai Shahr prison in Karaj.
On September 24th, 2012, he was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for his involvement in 'Salafi' activities.
Ilyas was a pious and respected member of his community. He actively preached Sunni Islam, and he held classes at his house teaching Qur'an and books of Sunni beliefs.
He had been repeatedly threatened by the Iranian authorities to close down his classes, but had refused to do so, leading to his eventual arrest.
Ilyas has been left with permanent injuries due to the lack of medical care he received after being shot by Intelligence agents. The two bullets that hit him were not removed, and are still located in his leg. He now walks with a limp.
